When you step into the world of Wonderwoods, you rediscover your relationship with nature. Wonderwoods would love to inspire you to live in harmony with the greenery and make you feel healthy and happy. It is time for a new balance between people, nature and technology in the city, and that is exactly what we want to achieve with Wonderwoods. Living in the middle of the greenery helps relieve stress and anxiety, boosts your mood and makes you feel happy.

Wonderwoods will be a Sister Park of Nationaal Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug or rather a sister forest. Due to the increasing use of forests and parks, but also due to the growth of buildings and the number of inhabitants in a city, the quality of nature is under pressure.

The greenery in and on Wonderwoods is inspired by the vegetation of the nearby Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park. A green oasis in the heart of Utrecht. In total Wonderwoods will have approximately 360 trees and 9,700 shrubs and flowers: 1 hectare of greenery.

The plants and trees have already been selected with the green specialists of Stefano Boeri Architetti, Laura Gatti Studio, Koninklijke Ginkel Groep and ARCADIS Landschapsarchitectuur. The trees are currently at a nursery where they are already growing in so-called Air-Pots. The big advantage of this method is that the trees have already lost their transplanting stress at the nursery. It is a revolutionary system that ensures that the roots form to the tree tubs of the facade. This ensures faster growth and better quality of the root system. A varied mix of planting is applied to create an attractive image during all seasons.

An expert team of ‘flying gardeners’ will abseil from the roof a couple times per year to maintain the greenery. As a resident, you don’t need to lift a green finger. Isn’t that great!

Wonderwoods will slowly transform all year around.

Did you know that one third of the food that we consume each day relies on pollination mainly by bees, but also by other insects and birds? Wonderwoods will return about 30 different species of animals – including birds, bees and butterflies – to the city.

In Wonderwoods we will open a new kind of hotel. Not one for humans but for bees; a so-called bee hotel. We don’t offer room service, but we do give the bees a place to nest. To further entice wildlife to live with us in the city, we integrate into the facade: nesting boxes for the swift, the house sparrow and 1 nesting box on the roof for a peregrine falcon.

We want to connect a new generation with nature again. And inspire, especially children, to engage with the natural world. Therefore, we’ve created a special children’s book for the little residents and visitors of Wonderwoods.
